Women Empowerment through Palm Craft: Dhivya’s Story from Muttukadu

Dhivya, a fisherwoman from Muttukadu village in Chengalpattu, faced daily financial struggles, relying solely on her husband’s income. Like many women in her community, Dhivya dreamed of a better life. That hope took shape when she joined a livelihood training programme offered by Accompaniment for the Rights of Coastal Areas through Leadership Initiatives (ARCALI), a social action centre in Muttukadu under the Chennai Province.

As part of a women’s economic empowerment initiative, training was provided in graft making using palm leaves. With the skills learned and a small financial grant from ARCALI, Dhivya and other women began producing palm crafts and selling them in the local market. Today, Dhivya not only contributes to her household income but also participates confidently in family decisions. She is truly grateful for the support provided by our partner.
