REAP’s Literacy Program

REAP’s Literacy Program

REAP’s Literacy Program Lights the Way for Underprivileged Children Reach Education Action Program (REAP), the dedicated education partner of Caring Through Sharing, an initiative of  JRDS development programs, is making a significant impact in Mumbai and its surrounding rural areas through its innovative Literacy program. This initiative serves not only as an educational endeavor but also as a beacon of hope for underprivileged children, delivering education directly to their doorsteps. Caring Through Sharing is committed to enhancing the lives of underprivileged children by making it easy for them to access quality education, ensuring that they have the opportunity to learn and thrive. REAP’s Supplementary Classes are specifically designed to support children facing the dual challenges of economic hardship and the absence of parental guidance in their educational journeys. Often, parents of these children are themselves illiterate, making them unable to provide essential support or afford additional tuition. This educational void can lead to a significant learning gap and, if left unaddressed, may result in school dropout. These classes serve as a bridge across the educational gap, delivering quality education in fundamental subjects such as English, Mathematics, and Science. Conducted within the premises of government schools, they ensure accessibility for those who need it most, particularly in rural areas and slums where REAP has established an extensive network of supplementary classes, impacting the lives of numerous children. Supporting REAP’s supplementary classes means providing much-needed resources and guidance to underprivileged children, offering them a better chance at quality education and a brighter future. Your donations can make a lasting impact on these children’s lives, helping them overcome challenges arising from their social and economic circumstances. www.jrds.org.in

Project ANKUR

Project ANKUR

Project ANKUR Transforming Rural Education from Exclusion to Inclusion in Hazaribag The Ankur Project (Non-formal school) by the Hazaribag Jesuits is changing lives through education in the villages of Hazaribag, India. This project focuses on helping Dalit children, a group that has faced historical challenges, by setting up special tuition centers in rural areas where educational resources are limited. The centers are designed specifically for Dalit children, breaking down barriers that have kept them from learning. The project also works to bring back students who had to leave school by addressing not just academic issues but also the social and economic factors that led to students dropping out. The project involves the local community by hiring local tutors from each village who understand the community’s needs and dynamics, making the education they provide more effective. These local tutors become not only teachers but also role models for the students, making the learning experience more meaningful. The Ankur Project also creates job opportunities within the villages by hiring local tutors, supporting the economic growth of the area. The project is making education a powerful force in rural Hazaribag by focusing on Dalit children, giving a second chance to dropouts, and involving the local community. It is a reminder that education has the power to bring positive change, even in the most remote corners of India. www.jrds.org.in

Ankil Kumari’s Educational Journey

Ankil Kumari’s Educational Journey

Ankil Kumari’s Educational Journey: Overcoming Challenges with JRDS Support (Shilpa, Radhika & Ankil Kumari) Ankil Kumari, hailing from a disadvantaged family of migrant laborers, faced numerous challenges in pursuing her education. Her father, Dinesh Uraon, the family’s sole breadwinner, worked as a landless migrant laborer in Bangalore, earning a modest income, while Ankil’s elder brother navigated the difficulties of life in Mumbai. Despite their earnest desire to provide a quality education for their children, the family faced a significant barrier due to their precarious economic situation.  Additionally, Ankil’s mother, Devkaliya Devi, required regular medical care. However, Ankil’s determination shone through, and despite the adversities, she excelled in her Class IX exams, achieving an impressive 60%. During this challenging time, Ankil connected with SEVA SADAN in Patna, Bihar, an organization dedicated to providing education to underprivileged girls and boys. The pivotal turning point in Ankil’s journey came through the support extended by the JRDS to the SEVA SADAN project. Thanks to this collaboration, Ankil, along with 45 other girls, received crucial assistance. The JRDS-supported project focused on Tharu and Uraon tribal communities and Musahars, a Maha-Dalit community, aiming to alleviate the financial burden of school and residential fees by offering scholarships. These girls, burdened by the historical and contextual deprivations of their communities, shared stories of struggles marked by centuries of enslavement, oppression, and humiliation. However, despite these challenges, they recognized education as the key to breaking free from the cycle of misery and poverty. The story of Ankil Kumari’s education journey is a testament to the transformative power of education and the support provided by JRDS and SEVA SADAN. It highlights the resilience and determination of individuals to overcome obstacles and pursue a brighter future through education. From Awareness to Action

From Awareness to Action

From Awareness to Action: Udayani Social Action Forum’s Anti-Plastic Campaign Reshaping Communities In a concerted effort to combat plastic pollution and promote ecological sustainability, the Udayani Social Action Forum successfully organized an impactful Anti-Plastic Campaign throughout the Bishnupur block. The campaign, meticulously designed to engage communities, employed a multifaceted approach, including rallies, slogans, posters, banners, speeches, door-to-door campaigns, and role-playing activities. Recognizing the power of collective action, the Udayani Social Action Forum aimed to connect with a broad audience simultaneously, ensuring that the message reached every nook and corner of the community. One of the highlights of the campaign was the active participation of Self-Help Group (SHG) women from the federation. They took to the streets, marching through local markets and villages, fervently advocating for the abandonment of plastic in favor of eco-friendly alternatives like cotton or jute carry bags. The vibrant rally not only captured attention but also served as a catalyst for spreading awareness about the adverse effects of plastic on the environment. The door-to-door campaign, an integral part of the initiative, sought to directly engage with individuals and households, educating them on the detrimental impact of plastic usage. The primary objective was to instigate a mindset shift, encouraging people to reconsider their reliance on plastic products. The overwhelming support received from the local population was a testament to the community’s growing consciousness about the environmental issues associated with plastic. The vision driving the campaign is contained in three simple yet powerful words: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. The Udayani Social Action Forum envisions a world free from the shackles of plastic pollution, and their goal is clear – to contribute actively towards making this vision a reality. In a statement, the spokesperson for Udayani Social Action Forum stated, “Our mission is not just about creating awareness but inspiring tangible action. We believe that by fostering a culture of reducing, reusing, and recycling plastic, we can collectively move towards a plastic-free world. The campaign is a small step towards a larger goal, and with the support of the community, we are confident in our ability to bring about meaningful change. As the Anti-Plastic Campaign gains momentum, it serves as a beacon of hope, illuminating the path from mere awareness to concrete action. Udayani Social Action Forum’s commitment to environmental stewardship stands as an inspiring example, urging other communities to join hands in the global movement towards a sustainable and plastic-free future.
